Champai Soren, the former chief minister of Jharkhand, made a dramatic shift by joining the BJP on Friday. He had previously resigned from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) due to dissatisfaction with the party's direction and feeling 'bitter humiliation.'
Accompanied by his supporters, Soren was welcomed into the BJP in a ceremony led by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Soren expressed that his surveillance by the Jharkhand government in major cities strengthened his resolve to switch parties.
Championing tribal identity, Soren criticized the Congress for putting tribal identity 'at stake' and committed to serving the people. His move is viewed as a strategic boost for the BJP to enhance its support base among Scheduled Tribes. Soren had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss his decision, citing the need to protect tribal existence from 'rampant' Bangladeshi infiltration in Santhal Pargana.
