Cricket Australia To Celebrate 150th Anniversary of First Test Match

Cricket Australia (CA) plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first test match, originally played in 1877 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), with a commemorative match against England in March 2027. The historical event will also include the continuation of traditional 'boxing day test' matches until 2030-31.

Cricket Australia (CA) is gearing up to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the inaugural test match, marking a historic milestone for the sport. The first test match was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 1877.

A commemorative match between Australia and England is scheduled at the same venue in March 2027. Australia emerged victorious in the original timeless single-innings match, defeating England by 45 runs. This iconic venue last observed the centenary of the test match in 1977 with Australia winning by the identical margin of 45 runs.

The MCG will also host the traditional 'boxing day test' every year until the 2030-31 season, while the Sydney Cricket Ground will stage the new year's test. CA CEO Nick Hockley expressed excitement for this upcoming celebration of cricket's pinnacle format.
