New Zealand has unveiled a robust squad for next month's one-off Test against Afghanistan and a two-match series against Sri Lanka. The majority of the squad mirrors the team that earlier this year suffered a 2-0 defeat to Australia on home soil, with seasoned fast bowler Tim Southee once again at the helm. Key batters such as Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Kane Williamson are among the mainstays.

Southee is supported by fellow pacers Matt Henry, Ben Sears, and Will O'Rourke, while the spin department features Mitchell Santner, Ajaz Patel, and Michael Bracewell, complemented by part-time options Phillips and Ravindra. New Zealand coach Gary Stead has highlighted the significant role spin is expected to play in the sub-continent, suggesting that the use of fast bowlers will be situational.

"Test tours to the sub-continent present unique challenges for pace bowlers due to the nature of the pitches and the climate," Stead noted, as quoted by ICC. "While we approach conditions with an open mind, it's clear that all our bowling options will be utilized accordingly. Managing the workloads of our pace bowlers, including Tim Southee, is crucial for the team's success." The Kiwis are set to face Afghanistan in Noida from September 9, followed by two crucial ICC World Test Championship matches in Sri Lanka beginning on September 18 and 26.

According to Stead, these matches are critical for New Zealand's ambition to qualify for next year's World Test Championship final. Currently third in the standings, New Zealand is eyeing key victories to push for a finals spot. "The points in Sri Lanka will be vital for our chances," Stead emphasized. "Following our mixed results in challenging conditions in Bangladesh last December, we are keen to build on that experience." After the Sri Lanka series, New Zealand will face India in a three-match away series in October and November, followed by a home series against England later in the year.
