Edmonton Oilers Hire Stan Bowman Amid Controversy

The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Stan Bowman, former executive of the Chicago Blackhawks, as their new general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations, the team announced Wednesday.

This appointment follows the NHL's recent decision to allow Bowman and two other Blackhawks executives to seek league employment again, more than two years after they were penalized for their roles in a sexual assault scandal involving the team. Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson expressed confidence in Bowman's experience and the work he has done during his hiatus from the sport.

Bowman, alongside former Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville and executive Al MacIsaac, had been ineligible since October 2021 following their inadequate response to 2010 allegations of a player being assaulted by the team's video coach. An investigation concluded in 2021 revealed that Blackhawks officials mishandled player Kyle Beach's claims during their Stanley Cup run. Reflecting on the past, Bowman admitted to his shortcomings and expressed a commitment to better conduct.

During his hiatus, Bowman collaborated with Sheldon Kennedy and his Respect Group to combat harassment and abuse in sports. With significant experience, including leading the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup titles, Bowman is set to replace Ken Holland as the Oilers' GM, aiming to lead them to another Stanley Cup title after their recent loss to the Florida Panthers.
