Infamous underworld don Prakash Pandey, currently serving a life sentence in Almora district jail, has taken a surprising turn towards spirituality. In a ceremony held within the prison premises, Pandey was offered 'diksha' to initiate him into monkhood by seers from the Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara.

Renamed as Prakashanand Giri, the don received a rudraksha garland and a sacred beads necklace during the ceremony, which included the chanting of Vedic mantras. The mediator of the event, Krishna Kandpal, claimed the ceremony was driven by Pandey's 'patriotic feelings' and his desire to lead a 'religious and pure life.'

Questions arise regarding the jail's protocols as authorities investigate how the event was permitted to occur within the prison. A seven-member committee has been set up by the Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara to probe the incident further.
