Charlotte Dujardin Scandal Sparks Debate on Equestrian Welfare

The video that led to Charlotte Dujardin's withdrawal from the Paris Games shows her whipping a horse's legs multiple times, igniting a debate about equestrian sports. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) suspended Dujardin over inappropriate training methods.

'What is shown in this video is completely unacceptable at any point in a horse's training,' FEI veterinarian director Goran Akerstrom told Reuters. 'The whiplashes stressed the horse and were detrimental to its learning process,' he added.

Following the Tokyo Olympics, the FEI released an action plan with measures to better protect horses, such as rules for nosebands and flexible obstacles. The Dujardin case has renewed calls from PETA to ban equestrian events from the Olympics.
