The Mahila Congress on Saturday staged a protest in response to multiple rape incidents across Madhya Pradesh, notably in Ujjain, where a woman was allegedly raped in broad daylight while bystanders filmed the crime. Protestors demanded stringent punishment for the perpetrators in a memorandum submitted to the administration.
Police have since taken the primary accused into custody. A second individual involved in recording the incident was also arrested. Following the victim's complaint, an FIR was filed, targeting a man named Lokesh. Police rapidly mobilized a team, apprehending Lokesh within two hours of the FIR. He has confessed to the crime and was subsequently sent to Bherugarh Jail after a court hearing.
The viral video spurred criticism from Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari, who questioned BJP's silence on the matter. Patwari pointed out that BJP leaders had been actively protesting a Kolkata rape case but were quiet on the Ujjain incident. In response, Madhya Pradesh BJP chief VD Sharma defended the government's swift action, asserting that the Congress was distorting facts to target the state administration.
