Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has entered into a significant agreement with the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) to construct a new acoustic research ship. The contract, pegged at Rs 490.98 crore, was signed in Kochi on Tuesday.
This specialized 90-meter vessel is designed to expand acoustic research capabilities, including tasks such as deploying, towing, and retrieving acoustic modules, and carrying out high-resolution sound velocity profile surveys. These functions are crucial for underwater mooring designs and offshore deployments.
Additionally, the ship is equipped to conduct meteorological surveys to investigate atmospheric effects on sound propagation, enhancing research in shallow-water acoustic studies. The deal underscores GRSE's capabilities in building advanced research vessels.
