The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have joined forces to create a specialised Centre of Excellence for research in fluid and thermal sciences. Announced on Monday, the centre will address vital thermal management issues for spacecraft and launch vehicles by leveraging IIT Madras' expertise.

The new facility will act as a central node for ISRO's research into thermal management, combustion instability in hybrid rockets, and cryo-tank thermodynamics. IIT Madras revealed that ISRO has assessed and approved the proposal, noting that the institute's resources can significantly aid in these areas.

IIT Madras disclosed that ISRO will provide initial funding of Rs 1.84 crore to establish the centre. The collaboration was formalised with an MoU signed between IIT Madras and ISRO representatives, marking a significant milestone in bolstering India's self-reliance in space technology development.
