The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday evening issued a red alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. The city has been grappling with consistent rainfall since the afternoon.
A civic official stated that the IMD upgraded its orange alert for the financial capital to a red alert, effective until 8.30 am on Thursday. The latest IMD warning at 5.30 pm forecasted extremely heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.
The coastal districts of Palghar and Sindhudurg also have an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall and storms. Mumbai's island city has been facing heavy rains since the evening, significantly impacting suburban areas like Mulund, which experienced severe waterlogging. This has slowed road traffic and delayed suburban train services, officials reported.
