Russia launched a nighttime attack involving several missiles and drones on northern and eastern Ukraine, leaving at least 29 people injured, Ukrainian military and local authorities reported on Sunday.
The assault targeted Ukraine's frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Donetsk, according to Ukraine's air force. Kyiv previously staged an incursion into Russia's Kursk region to disrupt Moscow's ability to conduct such attacks.
Local authorities on Telegram confirmed that a missile attack on Sumy killed one person and injured 16 others, including three children. In Kharkiv, governor Oleh Sinehubov reported 13 injuries, while Mayor Ihor Terekhov said two houses were destroyed and a gas pipeline was damaged. Ukraine's air defense systems destroyed eight out of nine attack drones launched by Russia over Mykolaiv region, though Reuters could not independently verify the reports. Both nations deny targeting civilians in the ongoing war since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
