A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted on Thursday, spewing red-hot lava and smoke in its sixth outbreak since December, according to the meteorological office.

The Icelandic Met Office reported a 3.9 km fissure extending by 1.5 km in about 40 minutes. Livestreams captured the glowing hot lava shooting up against the dark night sky.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs stated that the eruption's impact is localized and not a threat to life, with nearby areas evacuated. Notably, the lava wasn't flowing towards Grindavik fishing town, mostly evacuated since November.

This eruption occurred on the Sundhnukar crater row east of mountain Sylingafell, within a volcanic system that opens giant cracks. Magma accumulation had earlier prompted warnings of volcanic activity near Reykjavik.

The Reykjanes peninsula, housing 30,000 people or nearly 8% of Iceland's population, last saw an eruption on June 22. Authorities face challenges with repeated outbreaks as scientists warn of future activities.

Authorities have built barriers to protect critical infrastructure from lava flows. Although flights were unaffected, the Blue Lagoon luxury spa was evacuated. Fissure eruptions here do not usually disrupt air traffic.

Iceland, boasting over 30 active volcanoes, is a prime destination for volcano tourism, attracting thrill-seekers globally.
