A fierce wildfire has prompted the evacuation of around 200 homes in the rural community of Kauai, Hawaii. Firefighters are battling the flames with helicopter water drops and ground efforts. The blaze, which has already consumed over 1.5 square miles, remains 60% contained. Mayor Derek Kawakami urges residents to evacuate.
A fierce wildfire on the Hawaiian island of Kauai has forced the evacuation of about 200 homes in a small, rural community as firefighters scramble to contain the wind-swept blaze by air-dropping water, according to officials.
The fire, burning through 1.56 square miles between Hanapepe and Kaumakani, is threatening multiple structures and is 60% contained, said Kauai Fire officials. Authorities activated a siren system and went door-to-door, in addition to phone calls and texts, to alert residents of Kaumakani to evacuate amid the spreading danger, said Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami.
Amid the chaos, heavy machinery is being used to create firebreaks and prevent further spread, while electricity has been shut off to the island's west side due to the fire. Resident Chad Machado reported witnessing rapid fire spread and described the scene as chaotic, with residents fleeing in panic. This wildfire follows a catastrophic fire in Lahaina nearly a year ago, underscoring the recurring threat of wildfires in the Hawaiian islands.
