High Turnout Marks Assam By-Elections Amid Sporadic Violence

Assam's by-elections witnessed a voter turnout of over 64% in the five assembly seats by 3 pm, amid isolated incidents of violence, as confirmed by officials. The Election Commission reported the participation of 64.27% of the 9,09,057 eligible voters in the first eight hours, determining the fate of 34 candidates.
The bypolls were conducted in Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri, following the success of MLAs in the Lok Sabha elections. Bongaigaon saw the highest turnout at 66.94%, with other areas also reporting substantial participation, according to the Election Commission.
Despite minor disturbances reported in certain areas, polling continued uninterrupted. Anurag Goel, Chief Electoral Officer, assured that voting proceeded peacefully, and any malfunctioning EVMs were swiftly replaced. Meanwhile, security measures were reinforced by deploying 15 companies of Central Armed Police Forces.
