The Indian National Congress has announced its candidates for four key assembly bypolls in Assam slated for November. These seats, which fell open as current representatives moved to the Lok Sabha, are Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, and Samaguri. Notably, Congress decided to leave the Behali seat to the opposition alliance.
Samaguri's nomination spotlights Tanzil Hussain, son of former seat-holder Rakibul Hussain. Meanwhile, Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha, Sanjib Warle, and Brajenjit Sinha will contest in Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon, respectively. The Assam Congress unit faces internal strife over leaving Behali uncontested, as local leaders have urged for their own candidate.
On the rival front, the BJP also disclosed its candidates: Nihar Ranjan Das (Dholai), Diganta Ghatowar (Behali), and Diplu Ranjan Sarma (Samaguri). AGP and UPPL, BJP's allies, are set to contest in Bongaigaon and Sidli, respectively, yet their candidates remain unnamed. Polls are scheduled for November 13, with the results due on November 23.
