Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday congratulated Sri Lanka's newly-elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. In his message, Xi emphasized a commitment to fostering high-quality cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Dissanayake's Marxist background suggests the possibility of deeper ties with Beijing. Xi, 71, highlighted the importance of the China-Sri Lanka relationship and expressed a desire to work closely with the new Lankan leader to strengthen political mutual trust and enhance cooperation.
The BRI, launched by Xi in 2013, aims to connect various regions globally but has been controversial for its debt implications for smaller countries. Recent projects in Sri Lanka, such as the Hambantota port, have faced criticism for worsening economic conditions. Nevertheless, Dissanayake has assured that his administration would maintain a balanced approach between China and India.
