For the first time since becoming the Democratic nominee for president, Kamala Harris directly addressed the false claims made by Donald Trump regarding her racial identity and the former president's history of racial division.

During the Tuesday night presidential debate, Trump was asked about his recent comments at a Black journalists' conference, where he falsely claimed that Harris had 'turned Black' after emphasizing her South Asian heritage. Harris, whose parents immigrated from Jamaica and India, firmly rejected the notion that she had to defend her racial identity. Despite his earlier remarks, Trump claimed indifference, stating, 'I don't care what she is.'

Harris criticized Trump for using race to divide Americans, juxtaposing his divisive tactics with her campaign's themes of unity and freedom. Highlighting Trump's history of discriminatory actions, including his involvement in the 'Central Park Five' case, Harris urged voters to seek a president who invests in unity over division. Civil rights leader Marc Morial commended Harris' debate performance as 'masterful.'
