Legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi had a significant impact on the liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, according to a new book. The book recounts a 1954 concert by the singers that helped raise funds for the armed revolution against Portuguese rule.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli, now a Union Territory, were occupied by the Portuguese until an armed revolution liberated the territories in 1954. Unlike Goa, the liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli did not involve direct intervention by Indian armed forces. The two regions were recognized as part of India in 1961.
The book, ''Uprising'' by Neelesh Kulkarni, explains how music director and freedom fighter Sudhir Phadke convinced Mangeshkar to participate in the fundraising concert by highlighting the connection with Goa's oppression by the Portuguese.
