India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, advocated for reformed multilateralism and strong international partnerships during a virtual address at the FPCI Global Town Hall on Saturday. He emphasized India's proactive role in the Quad, a strategic coalition involving India, the US, Australia, and Japan, committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific region amid China's increasing assertiveness.
Jaishankar highlighted the pressing need to bolster national capacities and contribute to global stability and prosperity. He noted the emerging sharpened contestation between the US and China across various domains, including technology and geopolitical influence. India's response, according to Jaishankar, should involve strengthening its infrastructure, enhancing contributions to global health and security, and fostering trusted digital partnerships.
He underscored the importance of resilient and reliable global supply chains, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and lauded India's vaccine production capabilities. Jaishankar concluded by advocating for the sharing of successful experiences within the Global South and pressing for reformed multilateralism, using the Quad as a prime example of India's collaborative approach.
