Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday dismissed Human Rights Minister Silvio Almeida amid allegations of sexual harassment involving several women, including a fellow cabinet minister.

A statement from Lula's office cited the gravity of the accusations as the reason for Almeida's removal. A police investigation has been launched, the statement added. Almeida, known for his activism in minority rights, maintained his innocence but requested his dismissal to ensure 'freedom' for the investigation.

'It will be an opportunity for me to prove my innocence and rebuild myself,' Almeida said, deeming the accusations 'baseless' and 'absurd lies' in a video posted on social media. One of the alleged victims is Racial Equality Minister Anielle Franco, who expressed gratitude for the support she received and pledged cooperation with the investigation.

President Lula emphasized his stance against harassment in a radio interview, declaring, 'Someone who harasses won't stay in the government.' Both Franco and Almeida are regarded as significant human rights activists in Brazil.
