Brazil's Human Rights Minister Faces Sexual Harassment Allegations

Brazil's government is seeking clarifications from Human Rights Minister Silvio Almeida after reports of his involvement in sexual harassment surfaced. The presidential palace released a statement late Thursday, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations.

The government aims to address the case with the necessary rigor and speed, acknowledging its significance in terms of violence against women. Minister Almeida is asked to provide explanations to Comptroller General Vinícius Carvalho and Attorney General Jorge Messias. Local media disclosed that MeToo Brasil had received harassment complaints against Almeida, which the organization later confirmed.

Almeida firmly denies the accusations, labeling them as fabrications intended to tarnish his reputation. He stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating such reports and mentioned intentions to cooperate with relevant authorities. Minister Almeida also cautioned on the criminal nature of false accusations. President Lula da Silva plans to meet with both Almeida and Minister for Racial Equality Anielle Franco, reportedly one of the complainants, though Franco has not commented. Brazil's first lady, known as Janja, signalled her support for Franco on social media.

MeToo Brasil highlighted the challenges victims face when the accused hold positions of power, noting the difficulties encountered in obtaining institutional support.
