The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Friday took a significant step by expelling its Rajya Sabha member Sujeet Kumar for anti-party activities, which subsequently led to Kumar resigning from his House membership.

BJD chief Naveen Patnaik expressed his disappointment in an official order, stating that Kumar had let down both the party and the people of Kalahandi district. The expulsion was described as being effective immediately.

In a formal post, the vice-president's secretariat announced that Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who also serves as the Rajya Sabha chairperson, had accepted Kumar's resignation from the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), in accordance with Article 101 3(b) of the Constitution. Following Kumar's resignation, the BJD's representation in the Rajya Sabha fell to seven members.
