An Irish state inquiry has uncovered a startling level of sexual abuse at religious schools, predominantly run by the Catholic Church, spanning nearly a century with 2,395 allegations, according to government statements on Tuesday. The initial 'scoping inquiry' identified 884 alleged abusers at over 300 schools across the nation from 1927 to 2013, with the majority of incidents occurring between the 1960s and 1990s.

Following this preliminary step, a more comprehensive commission of investigation is expected to uncover additional cases, Education Minister Norma Foley announced at a news conference. 'The level of abuse is shocking. It is truly shocking, and so is the number of alleged abusers,' said Foley.

The inquiry relied on records maintained by religious institutions and victim testimony. This report is part of a series of investigations into abuse and mistreatment by clergy and members of religious orders, particularly within Ireland's predominant Catholic Church. The document is set to be published later on Tuesday after it has been shared with victims.
