President Nicolas Maduro accused the opposition of sabotaging the power grid. The blackout was attributed to an attack on the Guri Reservoir, although no evidence was provided for these claims.
Venezuela faced a sweeping blackout on Friday evening, with capital Caracas and numerous other states experiencing significant power outages. The disruption hit key facilities, notably a major oil terminal.
President Nicolas Maduro attributed the blackout to sabotage by the opposition, although he did not present any evidence to substantiate his claims. He accused political rivals and alleged fascist elements in the United States of targeting the Guri Reservoir, Venezuela's largest hydroelectric project.
The government launched a rapid investigation into the incident. All of Venezuela's 24 states reported either total or partial loss of electricity, according to Freddy Nanez, minister of communication and information.
