The opposition in Maharashtra has zeroed in on the BJP over alleged provocative speeches by its MLA Nitesh Rane, with claims that the saffron party seeks to incite riots as state assembly elections approach.
On Monday, a delegation of Mumbai Congress leaders, led by president Varsha Gaikwad, met with Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, urging action against Rane and other BJP leaders for their inflammatory remarks. The delegation also called for the withdrawal of police security for these leaders.
Citing specific incendiary comments made by Rane, Congress leaders suggested these statements might have political patronage, implicating Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. While former Union Minister Narayan Rane claimed to have reprimanded his son, opposition leaders assert that such remarks are part of a deeper, systemic issue in the state.
