Telegram Brouhaha: How Durov's Arrest Brings Moscow-Paris Ties to New Low
Relations between Moscow and Paris have deteriorated following the arrest of Telegram boss Pavel Durov. Durov, with dual nationalities, was detained near Paris over alleged crimes. The situation has intensified geopolitical tensions, with accusations flying between the two nations and significant international reactions.
Relations between Moscow and Paris have plummeted to new lows following the arrest of Telegram's founder, Pavel Durov, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. The tech mogul, who holds dual French and Russian nationality, was taken into custody near Paris as part of investigations into child sex abuse images, drug trafficking, and fraudulent transactions on Telegram, French prosecutors revealed on Monday.
Details surrounding Durov's awareness of imminent arrest remain vague as his French lawyer declined to comment. Lavrov noted that Durov's arrest has further strained Moscow-Paris relations, already weakened over the past few months. French authorities have accused Russia of attempting to destabilize France, especially in the run-up to the Paris Olympics, in retaliation for France's strong stance on the Ukraine conflict—an accusation Russia has denied.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced Russia's readiness to assist Durov due to his Russian citizenship, complicating matters due to his French nationality and a UAE passport. The arrest has also reignited global debates on free speech, with figures like Elon Musk weighing in, and highlighted growing global efforts to police illicit activities on digital platforms.
