Mumbai police on Sunday apprehended journalist Rishabh Chakravorty for allegedly assaulting a cab driver near Asalpha village in Ghatkopar, officials said. Post-arrest, Chakravorty was produced in court and remanded to police custody for seven days. Authorities have pressed an attempted murder charge after the victim sustained severe head injuries during the incident.

The altercation, which occurred on Friday, was captured on CCTV footage in Ghatkopar. Senior officer Santosh Ghatekar of the Parksite Police Station recounted, "Chakravorty's vehicle collided with the cab near Asalpha village. When the cab driver confronted Chakravorty for compensation, the journalist ignored him and drove away."

The cab driver pursued Chakravorty to LBS Marg in Ghatkopar. Upon stopping, the driver collided with Chakravorty's car from behind. Both Chakravorty and a woman passenger then exited the vehicle and assaulted the driver. Chakravorty reportedly lifted and slammed the cab driver to the ground, inflicting severe injuries to his head and body. The injured driver, identified as Qureshi from Govandi, was initially treated at Rajawadi Hospital before being transferred to JJ Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. The authorities have noted that they recorded statements from Chakravorty and the woman with him, and have issued notices for further investigation.

Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses, police added. (ANI)
