A 24-year-old man accused of making an obscene gesture towards a teenage girl in Nandanagar tehsil of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district has been apprehended, according to police reports on Monday. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pramod Shah informed PTI that the man was detained on Sunday night in Bijnore, Uttar Pradesh.
The incident ignited unrest in Nandanagar on Sunday, with scores of residents rallying to demand the swift arrest of the suspect. The situation escalated as irate villagers took to the streets and attempted to vandalize the barber shop owned by the accused.
Given the sensitive nature of the case, involving members of two distinct communities, Chamoli's Superintendent of Police and other officials have remained in Nandanagar to ensure order, although the situation now appears to be under control, noted the DSP.
