Former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump on Saturday during her visit to Taiwan, emphasizing that an isolationist policy isn't "healthy" and calling on her party to support US allies. Haley, who contested against Trump for the party's nomination, stressed the significance of backing allies like Ukraine and Israel, underscoring Taiwan's importance, which Beijing claims.
Despite the US not formally recognizing Taiwan, it remains the island's primary backer and arms provider. However, Trump's bid to reclaim the presidency has sparked concerns. He suggested that Taiwan should pay for US protection and dodged questions about defending the island against possible Chinese military action. Haley, who initially didn't endorse Trump after dropping out of the GOP race, later indicated her support but noted he needs to win over her voters. She cited their administration's show of strength, particularly against Russia, China, and North Korea, as reasons for fewer conflicts during their term.
Haley criticized US Vice President Kamala Harris, pointing out her involvement in significant geopolitical decisions under President Biden, which she claims made the world less safe. Haley highlighted the bipartisan agreement on the threat posed by China and urged for a strong stance against authoritarian regimes. She met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, calling for more international support for Taiwan and a pushback against China's claims.
