French President Emmanuel Macron will engage in crucial talks with key political figures in an effort to form a new government. Last month's surprising legislative elections left no party with a majority in the National Assembly, France's influential lower house of parliament.
According to Macron's office, meetings with leaders from France's major political parties are scheduled for Friday and Monday at the Elysee presidential palace. The objective is to create the broadest and most stable majority possible. The appointment of a new prime minister will be determined following these consultations.
The New Popular Front, a leftist coalition, emerged as the largest group in the Assembly, winning about one-third of the seats. Macron's centrist alliance came in second, while the far-right National Rally secured third place. The absence of a dominant political bloc raises the possibility of a hung parliament and potential political deadlock, an unprecedented scenario in France's modern Republic.
