NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has expressed his thoughts on being accorded Z plus security cover, suggesting it might be a measure to obtain authentic information about him as the Maharashtra assembly polls approach. The Centre announced the highest level of VIP security for Pawar on Wednesday, according to official sources.

Pawar, speaking to the media in Navi Mumbai, disclosed that a home ministry official informed him about the security upgrade, which also included RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Union home minister Amit Shah. 'Maybe since elections are approaching, this can be an arrangement to get authentic information (about me),' Pawar remarked. His security cover now includes a team of 55 armed CRPF personnel, following a threat assessment review that recommended enhanced security.

The highest Z+ security categorization is followed by Z, Y+, Y, and X. Pawar's NCP (SP) is part of the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which performed well in the Lok Sabha polls, securing 30 of the 48 seats, while the ruling Mahayuti coalition secured only 17 seats. The Maharashtra assembly elections are expected in October-November.
