In a significant political development, three of Congress's four MLAs in Meghalaya have defected to the ruling National People's Party (NPP), drastically reducing the Congress's presence in the state Assembly to a single legislator.

State Congress president Vincent H Pala alleged that the defections were fueled by the lure of money, power, and position. The defected MLAs are former state party president Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Gabriel Wahlang, and Charles Marngar.

With these defections, the NPP now holds 31 seats in the 60-member House. The Congress, on the other hand, has suspended Marngar and Wahlang for six years for their actions. The All India Congress Committee is being kept informed of these developments.
