National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Friday welcomed the Election Commission's announcement of a three-phased assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, stating it is better late than never.

Abdullah remarked that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been eagerly awaiting the announcement for a long time. The Election Commission's schedule outlines that the assembly polls will take place on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting slated for October 4.

The former Chief Minister noted that this is the first time since the 1987-88 polls that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being conducted in such a short span and in few phases. Abdullah assured that his party, the National Conference, is prepared for the elections and will commence campaigning shortly.

He also highlighted concerns regarding recent extensive transfers in the Union Territory's police and civil administration, urging Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar to ensure free and fair elections. Abdullah voiced suspicions that the current government might be aiding the BJP and its affiliates through these transfers, calling for an immediate review and cessation of those falling outside ECI guidelines.
