Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday reaffirmed his government's resolve to restore peace in the state, emphasizing that Manipur is home to 34 recognized tribes. Speaking at the 78th Independence Day celebrations at Ist Manipur Rifles ground, Singh blamed the unrest on external entities aiming to destabilize the region.
Reflecting on the ongoing conflict, Singh underscored that Manipur is a shared home for all its recognized tribes, including Thadou, Hmar, Simte, Meitei, Tangkhul, Mao, Maram, Anal, and Lamkang. He called for united efforts for a united and strong India.
Despite recent challenges, Singh expressed optimism about the state's future. Had it not been for the violence on May 3, 2023, the development progress in Manipur would have been significant. He assured continued efforts to overcome the setbacks.
Singh attributed the crisis to investigations that revealed silent infiltrations by external entities with a divisive agenda. He called on all communities to set aside political and personal agendas to ensure peace through unity and honesty, warning against conspiracies or instigations.
He also pointed to last year's May 3 violence, blaming it on groups opposing the state's development, and highlighted the government's provisions of essentials and services to those in relief camps. Efforts to relocate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and provide economic schemes were mentioned, along with central projects like the Imphal ring road and Imphal-Jiribam railway.
The central government's contributions in rebuilding flood-damaged homes and psychological counseling services were noted. Singh also commended local athletes Nilakanta Sharma and Mirabai Chanu and announced plans to complete the National Sports University by October next year.
