The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks regarding the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The TMC argued that Gandhi should consider the 'dismal track record' of women's safety during previous Congress administrations at the Centre.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, stated that the attempt to protect the accused rather than deliver justice to the victim raised serious questions about the hospital and local administration's role in the matter.

Expressing the country's shock over the incident, the former Congress president articulated an atmosphere of insecurity among the medical community and women. 'The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration,' Gandhi remarked in a post on X in Hindi.

In response, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh dismissed the allegations as unfounded. 'Before making such remarks, he should check and cross-check facts. He must not forget the dismal track record regarding women's safety during the Rajiv Gandhi regime and previous Congress governments at the Centre,' Ghosh asserted.

The body of the woman postgraduate trainee was discovered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. A civic volunteer was apprehended in connection with the crime on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
