A significant raid by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the Drugs Control Directorate in West Bengal uncovered a cache of spurious drugs at a Kolkata wholesale firm, with an estimated market value of Rs 6.6 crore.
The investigation resulted in the arrest of the firm's proprietor, a woman, by the CDSCO's Drugs Inspector in the East Zone, according to the Union Health Ministry. The operation took place at 'Care and Cure For You,' leading to the seizure of possibly counterfeit anti-cancer and anti-diabetic drugs.
The seized medications, allegedly produced in countries like Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh, lacked the necessary import documentation, classifying them as spurious. Investigators also found empty packing materials, raising further doubts about the products' authenticity.
Authorities are holding the seized drugs securely while samples undergo quality testing. The arrested proprietor remains in judicial custody for 14 days as the investigation progresses.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to counterfeit and substandard drugs.
The CDSCO and state authorities intend to continue working together to protect consumer interests and address the threat of spurious medicines.
