Days after US Ambassador Eric Garcetti appeared critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia, India reaffirmed its commitment to 'strategic autonomy.' The comprehensive relationship between India and the United States allows both nations the flexibility to 'agree to disagree,' according to the Indian government's recent statements.
At a recent event, Garcetti asserted that 'strategic autonomy' cannot be a defense in times of conflict, urging India and the U.S. to uphold principles when international norms are breached. Though not directly referring to Modi's Moscow trip, Garcetti's comments were widely seen as U.S. disapproval.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India values its strategic autonomy and respects divergent views. He added that the bilateral relations are strong enough to enable mutual respect despite differing opinions. Jaiswal made these comments while addressing Garcetti's views. Speaking in Delhi, Garcetti emphasized the importance of democratic principles, especially during global conflicts, and pointed to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an example.
