Ukraine's Bold Legal Moves Against Russia on Independence Day

On Ukraine's Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy ratified several laws aimed at Russia, including the ratification of the Rome Statute for joining the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Ukraine's new commitment increases the likelihood of prosecuting Russia for war crimes that began with Moscow's invasion in February 2022. As Kyiv celebrates 33 years of independence from the Soviet Union, membership in the ICC is seen as crucial for Ukraine's ambitions to join the European Union.

The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, for alleged crimes against Ukrainian civilians. Meanwhile, Zelenskiy signed a law banning activities of Moscow-linked religious organizations, enhancing Ukraine's independent stance. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed continued support for Ukraine's fight for justice and peace.
