The United States has ramped up its punitive measures against Russia and its allies, sanctioning around 400 more individuals and entities in response to Moscow's ongoing war in Ukraine. The US Treasury Department announced on August 23 that the new sanctions target those supplying crucial products and services that bolster Russia's military efforts and help it evade existing sanctions.

Among those sanctioned are 34 Russians including Pavel Belousov, son of the Russian Defence Minister. Citizens from Belarus, Italy, Turkey, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland have also been affected. Additionally, the US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has tightened restrictions on US-origin and US-branded items being sent to Russia and Belarus, adding 123 entities to the Entity List, including many in China and other allied nations.

The State Department underscored the necessity of the sanctions, accusing China of filling gaps in Russia's defense production cycle. Two major Chinese machine tool suppliers, six electronic component suppliers, and several Hong Kong companies supporting Russian military technology were particularly highlighted. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo called on global companies and governments to sever ties with Russia's military-industrial supply chains as part of the continued international effort to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable.
