Days following US Ambassador Eric Garcetti's critical comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia, India reaffirmed its commitment to 'strategic autonomy.'
Last week, Garcetti stated that 'strategic autonomy' is untenable in times of conflict and emphasized the need for India and the US to uphold democratic principles. Although Garcetti did not directly refer to Modi's trip, his remarks were perceived as a critique by Washington.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal responded, noting that India values its 'strategic autonomy' and respects the US ambassador's opinion, even though their views differ. He also stressed that India's strategic partnership with the US allows for respectful disagreements on various issues.
