Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah announced on Thursday that the party will contest the 2026 assembly elections as part of a 16-party united opposition forum.

Borah emphasized that both his party and other members of the forum will actively work to strengthen their organizational base in all districts, stating, "It is certain that we will fight the 2026 state elections together with the united opposition forum. But that does not mean that the parties will sit idle. All parties will keep on working to expand their organisational base, and there is no harm in it."

He clarified that being part of the forum does not imply equal distribution of seats, with allocation based on each party's strength, background, and constituency history.

The opposition forum includes the Assam Jaitya Parishad, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and CPI(M).

Previously, Borah said the Congress will contest upcoming by-elections for all five assembly seats in the state.

During a recent three-day meeting with AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, state leaders discussed strategies following delimitation of assembly and panchayat seats, focusing on decentralization of power and local-level decision-making.

Borah also mentioned the formation of six committees led by top state leaders to address organizational changes, training, and election management, including the establishment of a digital task force to ensure effective communication within the party.
