Authorities have decided to lift six gates of the Jayakwadi dam in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on Monday afternoon to release excess water inflow into the reservoir, an official confirmed.

Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Godavari river has increased the water stock in the Jayakwadi dam to 97.3% of its storage capacity as of Monday morning, according to the official. To mitigate the rising levels, the irrigation department has planned to lift six gates by six inches each, releasing 3,144 cusec (cubic foot per second) of water into the Godavari river.

Adjustments to the water discharge rate may be made depending on the ongoing inflow. Meanwhile, 500 cusec of water is already being released from the dam's right canal towards the Majalgaon dam in the Beed district, the official added. Additionally, the Marathwada region's major reservoirs, including Nimn Dudhna, Siddheshwar, Penganga, Manar, and Vishnupuri, are also discharging water at varying rates due to the increased inflow.
