US Vice President Kamala Harris has called for rejecting political violence and urged the nation to embrace a robust discussion on the stakes in the upcoming presidential election.

Americans will head to the polls this November to elect their next president.

"The hallmark of American democracy is a strong competition of ideas, policies, and visions for the future. Just as we must reject political violence, we must embrace a robust discussion about what is at stake in this election," Harris stated at an event in Michigan.

Harris condemned the recent assassination attempt on former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"It was a heinous, horrible, and cowardly act. My husband, Doug, and I are thankful he was not seriously injured. That day, we prayed for his well-being and immediately thought of Melania and their family," she said.

Harris emphasized that no one should fear for the safety of loved ones holding public office, and thanked the Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities.

"The United States is the greatest democracy the world has ever known. In the aftermath of this weekend's shootings, we must consider how we engage with one another in this campaign," she added.

Harris noted that President Joe Biden called for unity on Sunday evening.

"While our nation's history has been scarred by political violence, there can be no equivocation that violence is never acceptable," she stated to applause.

Harris concluded by stressing that a vigorous and civil exchange of ideas reaffirms the strength of democracy.
