For the first time in a decade, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lost its majority in both houses of Parliament. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saket Gokhale highlighted this shift on Tuesday, urging the Modi government to use the upcoming Budget Session as an opportunity to foster consensus.
Gokhale emphasized that the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), comprising opposition parties, stands ready to demonstrate the importance of accountability. "BJP's majority loss in both houses marks a significant change. In the Rajya Sabha, even the NDA coalition lacks a majority," he posted on social media platform X.
Gokhale further stated, "Modi's era of unilateral decisions has been challenged. This Budget Session is a chance for the BJP to learn the nuances of consensus-building." He cautioned that if unheeded, the INDIA alliance is prepared to enforce accountability. The Rajya Sabha currently has 226 members, with the BJP holding 86 seats and NDA 101, while the Lok Sabha sees BJP's 240 seats falling short of the 272 majority mark.
