Former US President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania, his campaign confirmed.

Reports state Trump sustained a minor injury when a suspected shooter fired multiple rounds towards the stage at around 6.15 pm from an elevated position outside the venue in Butler.

The US Secret Service promptly neutralized the shooter. "As was communicated earlier, President Trump is doing well and grateful to law enforcement for their swift action," said his campaign. The former president was hit by a bullet that grazed the upper part of his right ear.

"President Trump looks forward to joining the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he will accept his nomination," his campaign added.

The rally, attended by thousands, saw the former president ducking for cover as shots were fired. Despite the chaos, Trump managed to make light remarks as he was escorted to safety. The incident was captured live on news channels.

The attempt came just two days before the convention in Milwaukee, and was condemned by President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

"The US Secret Service neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. Former President Trump is safe," said Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

"One spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured. The incident is under investigation, and the FBI has been notified," he added.
