The central government has amended the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, enhancing the powers of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of the union territory. This move, according to Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, will render the Chief Minister 'powerless' and suggests that elections are imminent in the region.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued amendments to the rules, bolstering the authority of the LG. 'Another indicator that elections are around the corner in J-K. The people of J-K deserve better than a powerless, rubber stamp CM,' Abdullah posted on X. However, former Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta defended the changes as crucial for the impending Vidhan Sabha elections and ensuring free and fair voting.

President Droupadi Murmu has also approved the amendments. The new rules outline that any significant proposals, especially those related to Police, Public Order, and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, must be presented to the LG through the Chief Secretary. The changes are speculated to take effect on July 12, the date of publication in the Official Gazette.
