The death of 70-year-old Bankubehari Mahato in Bankura district on Tuesday has sparked a heated political controversy. The BJP has alleged that Mahato, a local BJP booth president, was killed by TMC members. Protests have erupted in the area, with BJP activists staging demonstrations outside Khatra police station.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee has countered the claims, attributing the death to a family dispute over land. 'The BJP is unnecessarily politicising the death,' Banerjee stated on Thursday.
According to police, Mahato was injured during a scuffle with neighbours over the chopping of a tree and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The Bankura Police have arrested three individuals from the same village and registered an FIR. Investigations indicate a land dispute as the motive behind the scuffle.
