Nael Al-Baghdadi clung tightly to his 12-year-old son, Omar, refusing to let go even after the boy was struck down by an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip. The heart-wrenching moment was captured in a photograph by Associated Press photographer Abdel Kareem Hana.
The father was in nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital with his injured brother when the blast hit Bureij refugee camp, killing Omar who had been playing soccer with friends. Omar's cousin found him amidst the chaos and transported his body to the hospital.
Upon receiving the devastating news, Al-Baghdadi carried his son's lifeless body to the morgue, where he refused to set him down until the funeral prayers were conducted and Omar was buried. This tragic event underscores the deep love and irreversible loss felt by a father in the wake of conflict.
