Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has expressed serious concerns over the death of Dalit man Somnath Suryavanshi, claiming he was assaulted in police custody in Parbhani, Maharashtra. The incident reportedly occurred after Suryavanshi was arrested in connection with violent unrest following the desecration of a Constitution replica earlier this month.
Athawale, after meeting Suryavanshi's family, demanded financial assistance for them and a government job for one family member. He alleged that although initial reports claimed a heart attack, injuries discovered on the body suggested otherwise.
The minister vowed to discuss the issue with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, emphasizing that the law does not permit the police to mistreat detainees. Athawale also reported that several young men affected by police actions had approached him seeking justice.
