As Maharashtra gears up for its assembly polls, the Thane district faces a rising tide of citizens seeking exemptions from polling duty. District collector Ashok Shringare has issued a stern warning, emphasizing the legal consequences for avoiding this civic duty.

With 18 assembly seats and 6,955 polling stations, Thane requires 30,868 personnel, including presiding officers, polling officers, and support staff. Despite the national importance of this responsibility, numerous individuals have requested exemptions.

While genuine cases will be considered, Shringare highlights the significance of polling duties occurring once every five years, asserting that disciplinary actions will be pursued under Section 134 of the Representation of the People Act 1951 against those deemed ineligible for exemption.
